The DVD of this production of The Elixir of Love is a fine and rare thing indeed. It captures the then "IT" duo of Netrebko and Villazon at their finest. Their stage presence, charisma and chemistry is undeniable. The disc also captures the rarest of rarities in the modern practice of opera production -- the audience demanded encore. Villazon's singing of "Una Furtiva Lagrima" received a long, thundering, demanding ovation. After a while, Villazon, while still in character as the shy Nemorino, lifts his eyes pleadingly to conductor Aflred Eschwé. Maestro Eschwé nods and gestures to his orchestra to reset. It is pure excitement! And, of course, the encore was even better than the first run through!
